Thommanon Temple

Thommanon is a modest yet exquisite temple constructed approximately during the same period as Angkor Wat and exhibits a similar architectural style. It appears to be part of a duo of temples alongside Chau Say Tevoda. Notably, Thommanon remains in significantly better condition than Chau Say Tevoda, owing to the comprehensive restoration efforts undertaken in the 1960s.
The intricate carvings found at this site are remarkably well-preserved and serve as a primary incentive for visitors to include Thommanon in their itinerary when exploring the temples of Angkor.

Layout and Design
Let us now turn our attention to the aspect of style. The Thommanon Temple serves as an exemplary representation of the architectural “Angkor Wat Style.” This style is distinguished by its elaborate carvings, impressive scale, and meticulous attention to detail, which captivates the observer.
The configuration of the Thommanon Temple is notably distinctive. It features a solitary tower elevated on a pedestal, accompanied by two libraries and two sandstone terraces, resembling a meticulously designed work of art.
However, the true allure of the Thommanon Temple resides in its carvings and sculptures. Each carving narrates a tale, and every sculpture represents a fragment of history immortalized in stone. From the devatas (female deities in Hinduism) to the intricate floral motifs, the temple offers a feast for the eyes.
History of Thommanon temple
There is ongoing debate regarding the precise date of the construction of Thommanon. The prevailing consensus suggests that it was erected by King Suryavarman II during the 12th century, contemporaneously with Angkor Wat.
Nonetheless, some scholars argue for an earlier construction date in the 11th century. The intricate carvings of celestial maidens (devatas) bear resemblance to those created during the reign of King Jayavarman VI in the late 11th century.
It is believed that Thommanon, like many other temples in the vicinity, fell into disuse at some point in the 16th century.
In the 1960s, the EFEO – École française d’Extrême-Orient – sponsored a comprehensive restoration initiative. As a result, the temple was restored to a condition that surpasses that of the nearby Chau Say Tevoda, despite its earlier construction.
In 1992, Thommanon was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Location & How to Get There
Thommanon is situated just outside the eastern Victory Gate of Angkor Thom. It is only a few minutes away from Victory Way, located just before reaching the Siem Reap River. The temple lies directly north of Chau Say Tevoda and is approximately 100 meters from the ancient bridge known as Spean Thma.
For those approaching from Angkor Thom, exit the ancient city via the Victory Gate, take the second left, and the temple will be directly ahead. If you are coming from Ta Prohm, proceed towards Ta Keo temple, then follow the road to the right and left over the Siem Reap River. After about 30 to 40 meters, turn right, and Thommanon will be directly in front of you.
