Spean Thma

The term ‘Spean Thma’ translates directly to ‘Stone Bridge’. This site features the remnants of an ancient bridge that once spanned the Siem Reap River. Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconstructions. The current structure is of post-Angkorian origin, utilizing carved stone sourced from earlier temples. Positioned adjacent to the river, it reflects the significant alterations in the river’s course over time, likely influenced by the bridge’s obstruction and the accumulation of sediment. Travelers will encounter this bridge while journeying between Angkor Thom and Ta Keo, as it is located just a few feet off the roadway.

The structure features 14 arches, each approximately 1.1 meters in width. Originally, these elevated arches facilitated the flow of water; however, the river has since altered its course. There are no carvings or elements of religious significance present. The primary function of this structure was as a bridge. At the apex of the structure, a large tree has taken root.
History of Spean Thma
Limited information is available regarding Spean Thma, aside from the fact that it underwent reconstruction during the 15th century. The bridge incorporated sandstone blocks that had been repurposed from other temples.
