The river at this location is remarkably expansive, diverging into multiple branches and extending over a distance of 8 kilometers. The Preah Nimith Waterfall is conveniently situated along the riverbank, providing easy access and breathtaking vistas of this natural marvel.
At the southern end of the waterfall, there is a hotel that offers scenic views. Additionally, a public rest area and various stalls selling beverages and snacks are available. The northern end features a series of wooden stalls where visitors can find dining options and a safe area for swimming. Freshly caught fish are plentiful in this area, and the prices are quite affordable.
The hotel provides accommodations starting at approximately $48, with other guesthouses located nearby. The optimal time for a visit, when the water appears particularly blue, is during the dry season, from November or December to May.
One of the highlights of an overnight stay is the opportunity to listen to the soothing sounds of the Mekong throughout the night, as well as to experience the stunning atmosphere during both sunset and sunrise.
A paved bitumen road connects Preah Nimith to Preah Rumkel, offering picturesque views of verdant mountains and valleys. Notably, the Asia Temple, featuring a grand Buddha statue, is also located in this area. Although Irrawaddy dolphins were once spotted in Preah Rumkel, there have been no sightings for quite some time. Nevertheless, it remains a delightful location with numerous local restaurants that provide a wonderful view of the Mekong as it converges back into a single, powerful river.
Location & Getting to Preah Ko Temple
Access to Preah Nimith and Preah Rumkel is facilitated by well-maintained roads originating from Choam Khsant, Preah Vihear City, or Stung Treng. In each scenario, the journey involves a combination of sealed roads and dirt paths for the final segment. As of February 2023, the condition of these roads was reported to be quite satisfactory.
Travelers approaching from Preah Vihear or Stung Treng will utilize Road 64, which is a well-paved bitumen route. Subsequently, one should seek the road heading north near the village of Sam Ang. This dirt road can be followed to its conclusion, after which a right turn will lead to Preah Nimith. If your destination includes Preah Rumkel, continue south along the sealed road, which eventually reconnects with the initial route taken.
