About Phsar Nath Market
Activity at Pasar Nath kicks off at dawn and wraps up when the afternoon heat sets in. This bustling market offers a wide array of goods, attracting locals who come to purchase daily necessities as well as occasional larger items. It’s also a popular spot for dining. Unlike the Central Market in Phnom Penh or Ben Thanh Market in Saigon, Battambang Central Market sees fewer foreign tourists.
The market is divided into two sections. One area is typically referred to as a ‘wet market,’ where various food items are available. Most of the food sold here is fresh, as there is no refrigeration at Pasar Nat, except for the ice used to keep seafood fresh.
Certain sections of the market, especially where fresh meat is sold, can have a strong odor. While local shoppers seem accustomed to it, visitors from abroad might want to hold their breath and quickly move to a different area.
If you’re in search of ingredients to take home, make your way to the dried goods section. Items like dried shrimp and spices have a long shelf life, making them ideal for recreating authentic Cambodian dishes in places where these ingredients are hard to find or pricey.
In the heart of the market, you’ll find numerous food stalls offering traditional Cambodian dishes. The fact that locals dine here is a good sign that the food is affordable and made from traditional recipes. Pasar Nath is the place to go for a taste of genuine Cambodian cuisine.
