Itineraries
day 1
Banteay Srei and Grand Circuit Heritage
Begin your exploration today by visiting the remarkable temples located outside the city of Angkor Thom. Departing from your hotel at approximately 8:00 am, your first destination will be the Pre Rup Hindu temple, constructed as the state temple for Khmer king Rajendravarman and consecrated in 961 or early 962. This temple mountain showcases a combination of brick, laterite, and sandstone in its architecture.
Next, continue your journey to the intricately carved and well-preserved Banteay Srei. The exquisite reliefs adorning this smaller sandstone structure are considered among the finest and most skillfully executed in Cambodia. Access to Banteay Srei has been available only since the late 1990s, following the departure of the Khmer Rouge from the region.
As you make your way back, visit the Neak Pean temples, which feature an artificial island housing a Buddhist temple situated on a circular island within the Jayatataka Baray. Your afternoon will then lead you to the Preah Khan temple, a site characterized by a captivating blend of tree roots and decaying stone structures. This site was commissioned by the renowned ‘temple builder’ Jayavaraman VII in honor of his father, and it offers a fascinating contrast to the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Currently, Preah Khan is undergoing restoration by the World Monument Fund and remains in remarkably good condition in certain areas. Conclude your day with a breathtaking sunset over the ancient ruins before returning to town after a day filled with memorable exploration.
Day 2
Sunrise at Angkor Wat – Angkor Thom – Ta Prohm – Floating Village – Sunset
Rise early to experience the breathtaking Angkor Wat, the largest Khmer temple and a quintessential representation of Angkorian artistry and architecture. The dawn hours provide a stunning and ethereal atmosphere for exploring the temples, as the ancient sandstone blocks are illuminated in golden hues by the first light of day.
Savor the breakfast box provided by your hotel before proceeding to the South Gate of Angkor Thom, renowned for its impressive gates and historical artifacts. Following this, visit the Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King, and Takeo, known as the "Jewel of Crystal," which is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva and was constructed in the late 10th century. Do not overlook Ta Prohm Temple, a remarkable fusion of human creativity and the natural world, characterized by its towering trees that have thrived for centuries.
Later in the day, venture outside the city for a brief cruise on Tonle Sap Lake to explore the local floating villages. On your return to the hotel, we will pause to enjoy the sunset from the base of Phnom Krohm Mountain.
