Independence Monument: All You Need to Know

The Independence Monument, located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, was erected in 1958 to commemorate the country’s liberation from French rule in 1953. This striking structure is situated at a roundabout where Norodom Boulevard meets Sihanouk Boulevard, right in the heart of the city. Designed in the shape of a lotus-like stupa, it reflects the architectural style found at Banteay Srei and other significant Khmer sites. The monument was crafted by Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann, who was personally chosen and guided by Prince Norodom Sihanouk to blend both religious and secular elements in its design. It reaches a height of 37 meters.

During national festivities, the Independence Monument becomes a hub of celebration. A ceremonial flame is often ignited on the pedestal inside by a royal or high-ranking official, and the stairs are adorned with floral offerings. Each year, both tourists from abroad and local residents flock to visit this iconic site. Behind the monument lies the Norodom Sihanouk Memorial, which was completed in 2013.
