Location and Getting There
Phnom Krom is situated a mere 10 kilometers to the south of the Siem Reap city center. As is the case with many attractions in and around Siem Reap, the most convenient mode of transportation is by tuk-tuk. It is advisable to consult your hotel for a reliable driver and to negotiate a fare of approximately $10 for a round trip. Ensure that the agreed price encompasses the return journey.
The journey itself is picturesque, featuring views of villages, rice paddies, and lotus fields. Numerous local eateries can be found along the route, offering delectable and authentic Cambodian cuisine. Many of these establishments provide hammocks for patrons to unwind after their meal while enjoying the tranquil sounds of the village.
Upon reaching the base of the mountain, whether by bicycle or tuk-tuk, it is recommended to explore the surrounding area. With a limited number of tourists, you will have the chance to visit a small Cambodian village, providing a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience. If the timing is right, you may encounter a field of blooming lotus flowers.
Walking Up Phnom Krom Mountain
Upon your arrival at Phnom Krom, you will first need to navigate a lengthy staircase, which will lead you to a paved road. This road will guide you to the summit of the hill and the temples located there.
At the checkpoint situated after the staircase, you will be required to present your Angkor Pass. This point marks approximately the halfway mark to the summit.
As you make your way up, take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding you. If fortune smiles upon you, you may spot goats grazing along the path. Upon reaching the top, the first sight will be the pagoda, with the temple ruins located at the top of an additional flight of stairs.
When to Visit: Sunset
Numerous locations in the Siem Reap and Angkor Wat regions offer stunning sunset views, each possessing its charm. Nevertheless, Phnom Krom stands out as the premier location due to its breathtaking vistas of the Siem Reap countryside, the sun’s reflections on the waters of Tonle Sap, the minimal presence of tourists, and the serene sounds of nature that enhance the experience.
At Phnom Krom, the optimal vantage point for observing the sunset is situated behind the temple ruins in the southwest corner.
The History of Phnom Krom
The temple situated atop Phnom Krom is a Hindu structure that was originally constructed in the 9th century under the rule of King Yasovarman. This temple features three towers, each one dedicated to a different Hindu deity. The southern tower is devoted to Brahma, the central tower to Shiva, and the northern tower to Vishnu.
Over the course of eleven centuries, the temples have endured significant erosion. This is not unexpected, given that they are made of sandstone and are exposed to the persistent winds from the nearby Tonle Sap Lake. As a result, many intricate carvings and detailed designs have unfortunately been irretrievably lost.
Phnom Krom is one of three hilltop temples established during the reign of King Yasovarman in the area, with the other two being Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Bok.
