Phare is not merely a circus; it is a vibrant fusion of theater, music, dance, and contemporary circus arts that conveys distinct Cambodian narratives, encompassing historical, folk, and modern themes. The youthful circus performers captivate audiences with their remarkable energy, deep emotion, unwavering enthusiasm, and exceptional talent, establishing Phare Circus as the premier modern cultural performance in Siem Reap.
The artists of Phare are students and alumni of the vocational training center, Phare Ponleu Selpak, a vocational training center in Battambang. This association was established in 1994 by nine young men returning from a refugee camp following the Khmer Rouge regime. During their challenging times, they received significant support from an art teacher who utilized drawing classes as a form of therapy. Inspired by this experience, they sought to impart this newfound skill to impoverished, socially marginalized, and troubled youth in Battambang. They initiated an art school, followed by a public school to provide free education. Subsequently, a music school and a theater school were established, culminating in the creation of a circus school for those seeking further opportunities. Currently, over 1,200 students attend the public school daily, while 500 are enrolled in alternative educational programs. Phare Ponleu Selpak also engages in extensive outreach initiatives aimed at addressing the issues reflected in their narratives.
Phare The Cambodian Circus provides these students and graduates with a platform to refine their skills and earn a respectable income. This financial support enables them to rise above poverty, fostering self-respect and independence.
